The Religious Struggle of Khanqah Kharipar Sharif: A Research Study

Abstract

Khanqahs have historically played a vital role in the preservation, dissemination, and practice of Sufi traditions and broader Islamic teachings across the Muslim world. These spiritual centers were not only places of worship and remembrance of Allah but also hubs of moral training, social harmony, and religious education. In the context of Pakistan, Khanqah Kharipar Sharif stands out as a prominent and influential khanqah that has been serving religious, social, and educational purposes for several centuries. Rooted in the Qadri Sufi order, this khanqah has consistently emphasized spiritual purification, devotion to Allah, and adherence to Islamic principles. The religious activities of Khanqah Kharipar Sharif were not confined to spiritual training and public awareness alone. Rather, the institution played a significant role in social reform by promoting ethical conduct, communal harmony, and compassion among the masses. It also contributed meaningfully to the teaching of Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) and Sufism, thereby bridging the gap between outward religious practices and inward spiritual development. Through sermons, spiritual gatherings, and educational initiatives, the khanqah helped instill Islamic values such as patience, tolerance, justice, and service to humanity. The founders and successive custodians of Khanqah Kharipar Sharif played a crucial role in sustaining its mission. Their leadership, scholarship, and spiritual authority attracted followers from various regions, enhancing the khanqah’s influence and reach. The purpose of this research study is to critically analyze the religious activities of Khanqah Kharipar Sharif, examine the roles of its founders and followers, and assess its social and religious impact, in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of its historical significance and enduring contributions to Islamic society.
